WEDNESDAY

The tea in the cardboard cup in front of me tastes like dishwater. I’m sitting in an interview room, alone with my thoughts, the only other sound the incessant buzzing that has rung in my head since I followed Noah into the garden earlier this afternoon. I think of him now with Jess. She seems to have assumed that Suzanna’s been taken ill, and that I don’t want Noah made aware of anything. She told me she’d take him to a supermarket and buy him a pair of pyjamas, and that he could stay overnight in her spare bedroom.

My son should be at home, where I know he’s safe, but the irony of the notion momentarily blows all other thoughts aside. Are any of us safe anywhere?

I get a feeling like I’m being watched, though there are no windows in the room. Then I spot it: the camera in the corner of the ceiling, pointed down at the table where I’m sitting. It’s common practice, I know; I assume every police interview room across the country has a camera installed. But it still feels disconcerting to know I’m being observed as I sit here waiting, not knowing what’s going on on the other side of these four walls.

Suzanna is somewhere in the station, too – possibly just a few corridors away from me. I wonder whether she’s spoken to anyone yet, and what’s been said. But I don’t need to wait long for answers. As my thoughts turn to Noah and how unsettled he might be with neither Suzanna nor me there for his bedtime, DI Harris enters the room, accompanied by the female officer who earlier read my wife her rights. He introduces her as DC Western.

‘Is Suzanna okay?’ I look from one officer to the other, but neither of them replies – no one speaks until the tape recorder is running.

‘Interview with Matthew Cross commencing at seven forty p.m.,’ says DI Harris. ‘The date is Wednesday, twelfth March.’

‘Am I under arrest? Do I need a solicitor?’

‘Do you feel you need a solicitor?’

The question is loaded. If I answer yes, it implies that I’m guilty of something. I shake my head.

‘For the purposes of the recording, Mr Cross has declined a solicitor. You’re not under arrest. Your wife has made a full confession. She says you knew nothing about what happened until this afternoon.’

I lower my head. With my hands clasped in my lap, I try to hold it together. I have to for Noah’s sake. When I look up, DC Western is looking at me with sympathy, though DI Harris appears to remain unconvinced.

‘Can I see her?’ I ask.

‘I’m afraid that won’t be possible,’ DC Western says. ‘Not at the moment. We’re going to need you to make a full statement – do you feel up to that now?’

I nod. She talks me through what needs to be included, and for the next half an hour I talk, giving them details of Reka and how she came into our lives, her relationship with Noah and with Suzanna.
